Sam's Profile

From 1998-2006, I was employed as a project engineer at Yampa Valley Engineering, Inc., a highly accomplished engineering and design firm located in Steamboat springs, CO. My duties included providing all aspects of architectural, structural, and civil engineering analysis and designs (including drafting) for high-end residential and light commercial structures. Unlike most engineers, I dedicated an ample amount of time framing in the field in order to better my engineering skills. At the beginning of my engineer-in-training days, I actually worked as a framer/laborer for two or three days a week on high-end custom structures that we engineered. I was an engineer/laborer, and I must say that it was invaluable being on site, seeing and learning how it all goes together. This was not taught in the classroom! In addition to my practical experience, I was responsible for the complete architectural design on approximately 50% of the projects, which lends to my awareness of aesthetics. Our clients were often contractors building high-end spec houses. The contractor would be involved from the beginning of the design, which also served as invaluable experience (collaborating with the person that would have to build and sell the structure)!

In 2007, I relocated to Denver and created Caston Engineering & Design, Inc. While continuing projects throughout the mountains, my engineering and design services expanded to accommodate the urban style projects also. In 2010, our 1st born son arrived! This altered our (my wife and I) opinions of living in the 'big city'. In December of 2013, we relocated to Ft. Collins and we love it!

I am a Colorado Registered Professional Engineer, PE # 40197.
